Muzak (commissioned work)
I wanted these paintings to work like how Muzak or functional music does.
As a starting point, I gave my paintings a structure around a set of equally divided grids arranged with no potentially rhythmic distractions. The colours are harmonised.
Together the paintings are meant to transmit a naive joy and are instantly recognised as familiar, unobtrusive and harmless, just like functional music. Individually the components in the grid pulse with their own individual energies.
I wanted them to emit a ‘What’s next?’ sensation that is mildly uneasy, but positively forward.
